An Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Ground
During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was to book a place to stay upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a major event was happening and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport ā but soon learned that airport, not like the one back home, does not operate 24 hours. Unsure of quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and started wandering towards the casino, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that was open 24/7. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for nailing a crucial interview the following day, yet, as a broke student, I couldnāt afford.
We could all use more folks who show such kindness.
I must have looked confused since a female student noticed me loitering in the city and asked if everything was alright. I explained my situation and right away she said I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University ā which was perfect, as thatās where the important interview was the following day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: a leftover filled rolls she had taken home her work shift. I was able to use the bathroom and a secure location and safe for the evening.
With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she took as a woman inviting a guy sheād just met stay in her room. Back then I existed within my male privilege bubble and was oblivious about things like that. Today, as a parent, Iām amazed she took that chance ā and remain very grateful.
I never did study at ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of kindness. I hope the universe has returned her good deed abundantly. The world needs more people with such compassion.
