Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
