The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
