Following a conclusive final ballot, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
After over 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Campaign Centered On Law and Order and Migration
Known for his staunch socially conservative views and praise for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily centered on promises to address increasing violence and drastically reduce migration.
He frequently pointed to foreigners, notably the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the election cycle, he delivered an final demand for them to depart before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His plans featured controversial measures such as erecting camps, border walls, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the army presence on the northern border.
Amid a Broader Trend
Many commentators view Kast's victory as fitting into a wider right-wing trend in Latin America, coming after recent electoral results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Governing Without a Strong Majority
Despite his clear electoral victory, Kast is not expected to command an absolute majority in parliament, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are combined together.
This legislative situation could complicate his agenda, including a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a measure for which he has not offered concrete steps.
"There are many aspects about how a Kast administration will be that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for achieve them," commented a political science professor.
The expert added, "On economic policy, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures common for the right. However where there is far less uncertainty is on security policy, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
