Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
