In the 94th minute, pure elation broke out for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández forced home a last-gasp equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola ranting in frustration and gifted the stand-in Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane represented the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's pivotal intervention one to cherish the 40-year-old in his dotage.

A Stark Contrast in Experience

On the City bench stood the most decorated manager of his time, a man with an unparalleled CV for football's giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, taking charge of his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a former coach at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and arrived to make his senior managerial bow after being seconded from his regular role guiding Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, headlined by Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task began as a mission that seemed nearly insurmountable.
