New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
