The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined initialism emerged a few months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from doctors including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for physicians to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what unity looks like.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
