The Latest Relaxed Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Regarding Bots, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh game mode called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option resembles the standard Breakthrough format but includes several notable adjustments:
- Each team has only eight real players, with the rest made up of 32 bots.
- Actions performed by human gamers grant full XP, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
- Just a pair of maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
- Elements like Player tags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.
So essentially, this mode delivers on its name: it offers a casual take of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think it's a good idea, since it gives more options for gamers looking for different ways to have fun with the title. But, if video games have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. In other words, many Battlefield 6 fans are mad.
Player Responses: From Fury to Support
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," states a response to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking idea," comments another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and another details all the issues they believe to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."
On the other hand, for every complaint, there are players sharing how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to warm up, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says a forum post. "This subreddit fails to see that there are players who actually go outside and don't play this game all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," adds another. One reply via social media explains that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is great for me," and someone else praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Criticisms and Player Feedback
Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize the new mode. A few folks have highlighted that it could increase queue times more extended for different playlists because of the sheer number of options in the game already. Similarly, some areas often face AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, even though it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide full XP, even against bots, but that was removed when they tried to remove XP farming from the mode. Thus Casual Breakthrough feels like the community meeting them in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the devs "dropping the ball so hard, I had so much fun in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Future Prospects: Will Changes Occur?
Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and responding to player input. Tasks that were overly hard got fixed very quickly, as did the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics shows this new playlist isn't performing to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
