The Three Lions to Launch the European Championship 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The English squad will initiate their Euro 2028 adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected qualification for a competition staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an England men’s match since eight years ago, when Turkey were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to stage the national team for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The English side are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, in the event of winning Group B, their last-16 tie would take place at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.
Championship Opening and Demonstration
The tournament was inaugurated at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the organizing bodies were confronted as they approached the site by approximately 50 activists, who demanded Israel to be removed from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Banners were displayed with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Timeline
The opening game of the European Championship will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will involve the Welsh team if they secure a place.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the title decider, which will be held on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to households and help connect with a wider spectrum of audiences.
Qualifying Teams
The Republic of Ireland are set to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.
The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualification process; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Playoffs
Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena complete the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches staged at each country’s national stadium.
The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in Belfast, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
Leadership Comment
“This will be a competition for the supporters and a festival of everything we cherish about the football – its fervor and power to bring people together.”
Over 3 million tickets, a unprecedented number for a Euro tournament, are projected to be made available to fans.
